Upgrade issue

Given a (free) VMware Workstation Player 16 installation, is it possible to upgrade it to VMware Workstation using a VMware Workstation 15 product key?

What is supposed to happen?

I doubt that a Workstation 15 key will work with the Workstation 16 software, given that VMware sell upgrades.
