Does Vmware Player 12 compatible with Vmware Workstation 16 virtual machine data?
Hi,
I have some questions:
- Does Vmware Player 12 compatible with Vmware Workstation 16 virtual machine data?
- Why the file size of VMware-player-full-16.2.1.exe is 580MB, but Vmware Player 12 is only 78MB?

1. Are you asking if you can take a WS16 VM and run it on WS12? Or something else?

Hi,
Re. size.
VMware Player 16 has a lot more on board than VMware Player 12.
To name just a few things:
- it has VIX pre-installed
- It has all the VMware Tools iso images
- It has container support like Workstation Pro.
- It has REST API support.

Hi,
Yes. I want to build a portable and compatible virtual machine in Vmware software. But I only have Vmware Workstation 16 ion my PC, so I want to make a operation system in my Vmware Workstation 16, but I don't know the backwards compatibility of vmdk files in Vmware player 16.
I don't need advanced features, it's ok if system can run normally in Vmware player 16.

So you'd have to create a VM using hardware version 12 for it to be backward compatible with Workstation 12: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1003746
I don't know how you do that with Workstation Player, but it can be done in Workstation Pro: https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Pro/16.0/com.vmware.ws.using.doc/GUID-FD035240-E960-41...
There's some extra guidance in the Workstation Player documentation on how to make a VM more "mobile": https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Player-for-Windows/16.0/com.vmware.player.win.using.do...
Hope that helps.
