Similar problem here. Got so bad that I couldn't get anything done inside ubuntu.

I just updated my vmware player tools and rebooted. I had let the tools get several revisions out of date.

That appears to have fixed the freezing. Though it's only been an hour since I updated tools, so hopefully it holds up.
