Using ThinApp to virtualise different versions of Internet Explorer
Hi
I need to use thin app to deliver IE 9, 10 and 11 to the same View desktop and having a few issues with it. IE 11 is installed as the browser in the desktop so works fine. I can get IE9 working by making some changes to the ini file and exe's in the deployment package prior to build but having no such luck with IE10, the build process completes but the necessary executables don't appear in the respository. Has anyone out there had to do this? Our software developers need to be able to test web apps in various versions of IE and Firefox (Firefox appears to be working by the way)
thanks
Sam

CGISam I'm not sure I understand your question.. You say the IE10 project is missing files? That would indicate an error in the capture process. IE9 and IE10 is fully supported as virtualized browsers.. Have a look at this KB article: VMware KB: Support Policy for Internet Explorer virtualized with VMware ThinApp it explains our support statement..
Can you please explain how your capturing process looks like, which OS you are using and more.. The more info the easier it will be to help you..

Hi
Many thanks for your help, I had given up home of any help so your comments are gratefully received.
Thanks for the KB - it looks very helpful
We have IE 11 installed natively on our gold images so the fact its not supported is fine. On our test ThinApp capture desktop (Win7 64Bit) has IE 8 installed so the captures had been attempted via upgrading 8 to 9 and 10 respectively. Its been a few weeks since I last attempted this but have access to the environment today so will give it another go. Are there any special things I need to do other than the norm (i.e. launch thinapp capture, upgrade, reboot, continue capture)?
We also want the IE ThinApps to have shortcuts created on the desktop, how do I go about doing that when by default each one will want to be called Internet Explorer?
Like I said, huge thanks for helping out.
Cheers
Sam

The shortcut names are bound to the Windows limitation, two files cannot have the same file name. So you will have to change the Entry Points name.. More info about Entry Points can be found on our ThinApp blog:

Hello
|I would be grateful of a bit more help if you can....I have managed to get round the shortcut duplicate name by adding a shortcut entry in the package.ini file which places a folder on the desktop for IE9 and IE10. IE9 works fine, however, I cannot get IE10 to work, all looks fine and great on the capture desktop but once its packaged it wont start when assigned to a desktop. The capture isn't straight forward, I start thinapp, then have to install a windows update prerequisite for IE10, reboot, upgrade IE from 8 to 10 and reboot and then make a registry tweak and reboot before finally running the post scan. Once assigned to a desktop, IE10 acts like the reg hack hasn't been applied - for info the reg tweak is changing the DWORD [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management] "MoveImages" value to 1. Without chaning this DWORD value IE doesn't launch on the capture desktop - this is an apparent known issue. Are there any log files that might give me an idea as to why this isn't working? thanks in advance Sam

You cannot run Windows updates when capturing.. ThinApp runtime will not be very happy with the system components.. Try to capture only the IE10 install..

Hi
I have run the IE10 prerequisite update on my capture VM prior to doing the capture and I get exactly the same issue - IE10 doesn't run. I have tried most different options no other than a streaming app - I've worked with these, do you think its worth trying to stream IE10 to my desktops? I can't find any logs that might help me either so I have nothing to go on
thanks again
Sam
