Hi all,

We've been using VI3 for server virtualisation for a period of time and are so pleased with the results we've decided to go down the virtualization route for some of our desktop terminal using VDI. So we've got VDM evaluation installed on top of our production VI3 and all is working fine except that we are still unable to get USB modem redirection to work. Here's our a couple of things that you should know before I explain the problem:

- USB redirection has been enabled in the VDM Administrator user interface Global Setting

- "VMware VDM Virtual USB Client Device Manager" is installed and appears correctly in Device Manager on physical PC with VDM Client installed

- "VMware VDM Virtual USB Device Manager" and "VMware VDM Virtual USB Hub" are installed and appear correctly in Device Manager on the virtual guest machine with VDM agent installed

Both the client PC and guest VM are installed with the same manufacturer-supplied USB modem driver. When the device is connected to the client PC, device manager displays the following:

"Agere Systems USB 2.0 Soft Modem (device in use by VMware VDM Client)"

All well and good up to this point. Then we fired up the VDM Client application to connect to a remote guest VM. After logging in, the modem showed up in the Devices drop-down menu so it looked like the modem had been recognized and USB redirection supported. However we couldn't get the guest OS (Windows XP) to recognize the device - it simply showed up as "Not functional" in the Phone and Modem options.

It's worth mentioning that the modem requires a corresponding COM port. Mapping the client and VM to the same COM port (or different COM port for that matter) didn't appear to help.

We tried a Hayes 56K USB Modem and the result is the same.
