Sounds like a USB 2/USB 3 issue.Lion doesn’t understand USB 3.1., and the default USB settings for a new VM may be set for a virtual USB 3 controller  

Check this: In the VM’s settings, open the USB & Bluetooth setting. Click on the triangle to the left of the text “Advanced USB options” and make sure the USB compatibility is set to USB 2.0.
