Yep, previous post is all correct and answered.
All hosts are added to the domain and added to the vcenter using FQDN.
I mean is the ESXi node joined to the domain?When you open the Host Web interface, does Manage - Security & Users - Authentication show that Active Directory is enabled?

Yep, see attached. I have erased names of domains for security purposes.
Ok, now try to add the new user via that Host Web client (same account syntax and password).Does that work?
I have tried manually and I get the error 'Invalid characters found in user name. Please use only alpha-numeric characters.'
I assume you tried with an account in the format 'domain/user', seems that is not allowed as a local account on the ESXi node.
Not sure why you would want to do that.For Permissions you can use such an account, but not for a local account on the ESXi node.
