Edge software version

Good day,

This post may seem odd but so is my situation. Our company have just signed a contract with VMware, purchased some edges (510 and 610), got us a 2 day online training, and have just handed me the superuser account for our Orchestrator.

I definitely do not feel confident I will be able to migrate our network from Cisco to VMware SD-WAN because I lack so much information I cannot imaging I will be able to pull this through.

The first thing I did (in the absence of contact with the sales engineers and any idea what our contract says) was to log in to Orchestrator, create a new (dummy) edge (model 510) in an attempt to find out what software version we had in the contract so I could start reading documentation based on that particular version. Allas, Orchestrator shows a blank space at where the SW version should be since I have not activated the device of course.

Is there a way to know what SW version am I allowed to use just by searching somewhere within Orchestrator?

Or do I have to ask my colleagues to connect one Edge to the internet, activate it, and see what happens?

Best regards,

Talal

PS. Be prepared to see many such bizzare emails from now on.

Hi,

By default, the Edge software image management feature is disabled.
If it is disabled, you might have to activate Edge to see it in the Orchestrator.
If you need to enable this feature, please contact VMware Support.

VMware Docs
Enable Edge Software Image Management

Good day @khirom

Many thanks for your response.

I have indeed asked the partner to enable this feature, which they did.

Now I can see under 'Service Settings' --> 'Edge Management' --> 'Software and Firmware Images' that version 5.0.1.4 is the most up to date image supported, while 4.3.1 is set as the default.

Should I change the default to 5.0.1.4?

Are there any benefits from sticking with an older image?

Hi,

This KB might be helpful.

VMware SD-WAN Software Versions: Recommended Releases (80741)
https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/80741

Version 4.3.1 is already EOS.
You should change your default software to a different version.

Recommended software versions are listed in the VMware KB.
This KB will be updated when a new version is released.
I recommend subscribing.

'Software and Firmware Images' setting is used for activation of new edge.

Hi,

VMware may not have assigned software to your tenant.

Please contact a VMware Sales Engineer or SR to request that the appropriate software be assigned to you.
