simple setup
I have a server 2003 with exchange 2007 running as a stand alone with Static IP.
On my new server I installed vmware esxi and converted the server 2003 with exchange to run inside esxi.
My question is setting the IPs, host names. Do I set the esxi server to the static address previously running to the standalone. If so what do i set the converted server IP's as?

For simplicity, we have the ESX hosts on a separate IP range from the Windows/Solaris guest servers.
Changing the IP address of the Exchange server can be problematic. You're better off leaving that alone and giving the ESX server a new dedicated IP address.

The IP address used for management of your ESXi host is not at all tied to the IPs for your VM. If you're on a single subnet, you'll need a unique IP for ESXi to manage it and then unique IPs for each of your VMs. The vSwitch that ESXi creates is simple a basic switch and there are no IP services associated with it (i.e. DHCP, NAT, etc). The good thing about this is that you can put a NIC from ESXi into your DMZ, but ESXi itself will not require an IP address in the DMZ subnet. Only your VMs will have an IP in the DMZ subnet.

OK, I think I need to explain better. I had a physical server that had its own Static IP. When I converted to a VM, the NIC still shows as Static but it can"t connect with this IP as it comes directly from the cable modem. If I install an second NIC, how do I get the VM to use the 2nd NIC with the static IP that it was using on the previous physical machine
You guys are great, thatnk you for your help
