Vsphere Pre-Update Checks error: Precheck could not run successfully on the source vCenter Server.

Current vSphere Client version 7.0.3.01100

I want to upgrade to version 7.0.3.01300, build 21290409 2/22/2023

In Update Planner, when I start the Pre-Update Checks report, I get this error:

Precheck could not run successfully on the source vCenter Server. Check the upgrade logs on the source vCenter Server. Contact support.

To prepare for a support call, what information should I collect from an ssh session?

Has anyone seen this error and gotten past it?

I'm helping a colleague, and this is my first dip into troubleshooting vsphere.

Thank you!

Hello,

During pre-check, the details are caught in the file, you can validate those

/var/log/vmware/upgrade/requirements-upgrade-runner.log

Primarily below requirements are the one

  • Ensure all services are up and running
  • Enough free space available on root and /storage/seat
  • validate the certificates are valid and SAN name matches the PNID /Hostname
  • DNS reverse and forward lookup

I ended up using the VAMI interface to run the update to 7.0.3.01400, and it succeeded. We still need to update to 8.x, and VAMI does not show those updates. But at least it got us past the failing 7.x requirements check.

VAMI is the best way to keep an appliance up to date during the major release (7.x).   When you go to do the 8.0 upgrade, it will deploy a new appliance and migrate settings over.
