HP BL460c with 554FLB and 554M, Cisco B22 FEX, how do you set the adapter personality?
Hi,
I have an HP c7000 Blade chassis with 4x Cisco B22HP FEX modules. My hosts are BL460c Gen8 with a 554FLB LOM and a 554M mezzanine card.
We're moving from Flex10 VC networking to B22 FEX and I'm currently testing different configurations for host networking. The issue I'm facing is that both the 554FLB and the 554M are shown on the host as HBA and NIC. This could lead to some issues down the road and potential mistakes. I'm trying to find a way to reliably set the adapter personality so they're either iSCSI HBA or NIC.
So far I've tried setting the personality using PXESelect (CTRL-P during boot) and chosing NIC for the 554FLB and iSCSI for the 554M. This doesn't work and the adapters still come up with both functions in vCenter.
I've also installed the Emulex CIM provider package for VMware and the Emulex OneCommand plugin for vCenter. I can see and set the adapter personality but the changes are ignored.
The firmware and drivers are at the version suggested by HP in their VMware recipe. The host was installed using HP's latest customised ISO. I can't find any documentation from HP, Emulex or VMware.
VMware support suggested using OneConnect.
Emulex support said HP overrides their firmware on boot and ask them for help.
HP support is still looking into it.
Basically my goal is to test:
1. Host with 2x 554FLB vDS for management, vMotion, guest networking, 2x 554M iSCSI HBA
2. Host with 2x 554FLB vDS for management, vMotion, guest networking, 2x 554M software initiator
3. Host with 2x 554FLB vDS for management, vMotion, guest networking and storage.
But I don't want to possibility of someone configuring a NIC while it's used by iSCSI.
I can't be the only one using HP blades with B22 networking?
Thanks
