Thank you Roberto for posting the actual solution to this and not just a workaround like the VMware article states. I created the file as you directed on the 3 VM's that I recently upgraded to 5.1 and the error immediately stopped. There was no need to restart the VMware Tools service. As soon as the file was there it stopped the errors.
