Sharing datastore cluster between ESXi 7.0.3 Clusters for VM Migration

Dear Community

We plan to migrate  VMs online from old   7.0.3 esx cluster  to the new 7.0.3 esx Cluster  with the same storage .

Both the clusters are in the same Vcenter

is sharing datastore clusters / standalone datastores across multiple esx clusters like this fully supported  ?

can the VM be migrated online via vmotion in this setup  ?

Any caveats to be prepared of  ?

Thanks in advance for the support

as long as you can see the shared storage on both clusters live migration will be ok. But since you are doing it online make sure that the same network is also available on destination cluster. If the vms have iso's or rdm's mounted they need to be available on the destination as well.

Hi @anandgopinath ,

Live Migration :

1. Need to have vMotion network connectivity between the Clusters . (Ensure that you have a good speed)

2. Set the same level of EVC (Ignore if there is not EVC set of the source and if the Hardware is same)

3. Ensure you do not have any Passthrough device connected . (GPU etc)

Cold Migration:

1. Power off the VM in Source > Unregister the VM from the source Cluster

2. Register the VM in destination cluster .

If you do not have networking between cluster , I recommend you go with cold migration .

Hope this helps !!

Thanks

yes it's supported. But keep in mind that live VM migration is supported also without shared storage.
