vclog windows agent

Hello,

I was very pleased to see that in version 2.0 (beta) there is a windows agent for vclog insight:

I got a couple of questions:

1) is the traffic between the agent and the vclog server encrypted]

2) if i have an esx server with 40 running windows servers on it. How many licenses do i need then?

Regards

Hans

1.) It depends on how you configure the agent. By default it is over Log Insight's new ingestion API which is TCP 9000 and not encrypted. The agent also supports sending events over the syslog protocol in which case you can choose port 1514 which does support encryption. For more information see this link: VMware vCenter Log Insight 2.0 Documentation Center

2.) Log Insight is licensed on an operating system instance (OSI) basis. If you are collecting logs from ESX then each ESX = 1 OSI. If you collecting logs from 40 windows VMs then you need 40 OSI. If you are collecting from both ESX and VMs then you would need 41 OSI. If you want to collect form vCenter Server as well then you are up to 42. The easiest way to think about it is per originator of a syslog message (e.g. unique IP address).

thanks, i really was hoping that log insight would be a splunk killer but with this license model its all most as expensive as splunk. I got a qoute for 300 osi's which will cost me 7 euro's per month per osi.

What would have been a fair price in your mind?

Hee Bill,

I have been thinking about this the past 4 days but i haven't got a good answer yet.

I'm looking to the prices with VSPP in mind. For example vcenter operations manager is cheaper (4,5 euro)  per month per machine  (this is an average price of course cause vcops is licensed per GB memory).
And i would argue that vcops is a more advanced product then loginsight
