VMWare instalation and Windows XP license

Actually I have a Windows XP installed on my computer, no vmware for a while. Because I want to virtualize using ESXI in this computer, can i use the same windows xp license on a virtual machine? I think Windows XP OEM identify motherboard serial number, I need to know if this serial number is equal to the physical number on a virtual machine, or vmware emulates another serial number. If you have any experience on this type of migration, please help me with your feedback.

Thanks,

Gustavo

Hello,

If its an OEM license then no. You may not be able to use it, but legally you may not be able to use it. I would read the EULA carefully, as there is language about what you can run this license upon. Not being a lawyer I can only suggest you read the EULA or have legal counsel do so for you.

Thanks for response, Edward.

Ok, I know Windows OEM license doesn't permit. But, technically, does it works?

Because I need this to perform a migration, and this license becomes active for a weeks only, in a development environment, it's better to me not buy a new license to use just for a few days.

It might or might not work - Microsoft has lots of restrictions built into their software - more each time I get updates. However, the folks in these forums aren't going to provide assistance in possibly breaking the license agreements.

I would also suggest that you look closely at the hardware you are contemplating using ESXi on - most workstations will not support ESXi. Look at the information on this URL for what hardware supports ESXi:

We tried to virtualize some of our PC's as a DR standpoint because well ghosting only really works when you have exactly the same hardware. Needless to say we had to test it and with winxp OEM license off of a dell box, it wouldn't fire up without going through the activation piece because all the hardware changed. If you try to go through the activation piece it'll say its not a valid key anymore because it was licensed to the physical desktop box and thats it.

So in all reality it wont even work for a little while if you try to do it. Also if you do try and do it anyways it could possibly null out the current OEM license you have now.
