Internal Apps not deploying to Work Profile but are on Work Managed

Good morning all,

I would very much appreciate any suggestions or thoughts anybody could provide with regards to an issue I'm having deploying Internal Apps to a work profile.

I have setup a very simple Organizational Group for testing with only 1 profile setup to enforce a 4 digit pin.

There is a single user account configured within this OU and I have assigned 4 apps to push automatically to the OU, 2 apps from the Google Play Store & 2 Internal Apps.

I've tested with a Samsung A8, XCover 4 & J5 Prime and all have the same outcome.

If I enroll the device as a work managed device (via the AFW#Airwatch identifier) then the phone completes the setup, enforces the pin and all 4 apps (2x Play Store & 2x Internal) download automatically.

If I reset the device, complete the setup as a normal phone (to simulate somebody's personal device), download the Intelligent Hub app and enroll the device with a work profile the device enforces the pin, downloads the 2 Play Store apps automatically but the 2 internal apps don't ever download.

If i look under the device's detailed view -> Apps I can see that 2/4 Auto Apps have been installed.

If I click on the apps tab for that device the 2 public apps are listed but not the private apps.

If i go to Apps & Books -> Native and click on one of the internal apps that hasn't installed and click on View I see

1 Not Installed

0 Installed

1 Assigned

If I click on it for more information I see that the app is Not Installed & Pending Release.

If I try and force the install nothing happens.

Looking in the troubleshooting log for the device I can see an Application install request but nothing ever happens on the device.

On the device, within the Work profile, If I go to the Work Play Store or go the App Catalog I can only see the 2 Public Apps & not the 2 internal Apps.

After much Google'ing I did manage to find this article:

https://support.workspaceone.com/solutions/SOL-5357

“If the reason says ' Pending release'  and the application status is Not Installed, please contact our support team as the queue is in a blocked state which will need to be resolved via the database.”

So i contacted the company that hosts and manages our Airwatch (Version: 18.11.0.11) MDM for us and sent them the article and they have come back saying:

' We have investigated and can confirm we do not have any other customers with apps in a pending state and our messaging queues do not have an issue, so it’s very unlikely it's a platform issue.'

I've tested multiple setups and configurations and cannot figure out what I've done wrong and until I can figure this out we cannot start offering Work Profiles as an option to our customers.

If anybody has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you and apologies for the long post!

are you uploading it through the add internal app section? that only works for fully managed devices (Google limitation, self hosted apk https://support.google.com/googleplay/work/answer/6145182?hl=en&ref_topic=6145152), to push to everything instead click the add app on public choose android and search and upload the app in the iframe you get, (warning this will host on google, but only your users can see it)

Hey Stephen,
Thanks for this, it looks like a similar process to uploading the app in the Google Play Console as a developer.
I've started playing with this but unfortunately the app is marked as debuggable so I need to speak to the developer before I can continue.

Same issue here. Internal Apps aren't no deployed to devices in Work Profile mode
Only public apps are installed in Google for Work or Knox Workspace.

Try adding a whitelist with that app in it, this has worked for others with this issue.  BUT once the app is whitelisted there is a bug that wont let you un-install it.

Hi,

When I try to add the APK as Private App to the iframe on the PlayStore (accessed from adding a new Android public app menu), I have the following message ' Upload a new APK file with a different package name' . I tried with several APK files with the same result.
Anyone has faced this issue ? Any idea ?

Hi Mathieu

probably you are trying to upload an apk with a package name that already exists in the PlayStore. Once a package name has been uploaded you can not load it again or delete it from the store to reload it.

as mentioned before you need to do a app control profile and whitelist the app.  Once you do you will not be able to remove the app from the device.

Its Google's nice way of forcing you to upload to playstore.
