I am about to upgrade the processor on a Dell T100 that has ESXi5 hypervisor installed on it. It also has 2 Windows VMs. I wondered what would happen to the VMs once the host processor is upgraded. Would I need to remove the vCPUs and also reinstall VMtools or would the upgrade not affect the VMs?
You shouldn't need to modify the VM's settings, unless you have CPU affinity configured, or your new CPUs have less cores than required by the VM. However, since the CPU type/model is seen by the VM, the Windows VMs may require re-activation.
