Hi welcome to the communities,

I'd say there are basicly no limitations. You can virtualize any application and any workload.

Only thing limiting this would be that the operating system you want to virtualize needs to be supported by VMware.

Yes you can.

I've seen (allmost) all of your examples running in productive virtual environments. (I've not seen Blackberry, but I've found a pdf way back from 2010, describing the Blackberry Deployment on VMware: https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/Blackberry-Enterprise-Server-Deployment-Guide.pdf )

VMware has created a little site with examples and best practice guides for some of the critical apps, that some people were hesitant to virtualize.

Maybe you should take a look at it:

Hi,

In addition to the details provided by note that you can virtualize only x86 based applications. If you have an infra with RHEL/UNIX (HP UX/AIX) applications on IBM Power, HP Itanium servers then you would have to check if these application can work on Intel/AMD platforms. However from the list that you provided it seems to be Microsoft applications and virtualizing these apps should be fine however you must design the virtual infra for teir 1 apps with care.

I think vitualization is somewhat ralated to that of hardware rather than software. That is to say, those x86 infrastructure resources can be virtualized into software and be used as if they are hardware. Any application running on a VM does not know it is being ran on a physical one or a VM one. But this does not mean apps have something to do with virtualization.

Everything can be virtualized. The default position should always be to virtualize and a case against needs to be made.

I have over 200 servers on 20 hosts. I also have 2 SQL servers that are not virtualized because they require all of the physical box's resources. Getting an Enterprise license for 4 sockets per machine would not have made financial sense.
