migrate vm from hard drive of ESX server to SAN

Hi,

I have a Vmware ESX server, and becuase we did not have enough space on the SAN, we end up putting one of the VM in the physical hard drive of Vmware ESX server, now we do have extra space on the SAN. If it is a way, what will be the best way to migrate or move, my VM from the physical hard drive of ESX server to the SAN,...

Hello,

If the VM needs to stay running you can use Storage VMotion. Else if you have VC, then you can cold Migrate the VM to the new storage location after shutting down the VM. If you do not have VC, then I suggest you use VMware Converter.

Even if you dont use VC, you could simply shut down the VM, remove it from the Inventory (right click the VM), move the VM files from the local ESX Storage to the SAN (via ssh etc.), browse the SAN Datastore with the VI Client, select the VMs .vmx file and add it to the Inventory using the right-click contextmenu. On startup you may be ask if you want to create a new indetifier, which is not necessary since it is not a clone.
