Hi everyone

Just want to find out what is the new licensing agreement with windows?

How many windows2003 standard edition servers can you run with one license on vmware?

You can run one copy of Windows 2003 standard per license with no virtualision rights other than itself. ie if you are running a hosted environment on Windows 2003 and a 3 windows guests, you will need 1 license for the host and 3 licences for the guests therefore a total of 4 windows 2003 standards

How many windows2003 enterprise edition servers can you run with one license on vmware?

you can run upto five copies of Enterprise 1 physical for the host and 4 virtual. therefore in the above example you would only need 1 windows 2003 enterprise licence, if you are running on ESX you do not get the Physical license only the 4 virtual ones. you must have a license for each host, therefore if host 1 has 3 windows guest and host 2 has 5 guests you will need 3 windows 2003 enterprise licences, if you move one guest from the 5 guest host to the 3 guest host you will only need 2 windows 2003 enterprise licences

If you are a large house you could licence for DataCenter (this has a per processor count (ie dual proc (2 processor licences) quad proc (4 processor licences)) this does give you the advantage or unlinited virtualisation rights.

You need to do your numbers carefully, it does not take too long before the purchase of DataCenter licences becomes cost effective.
