Vmware Virtual Center

Hi,

Can i use the the VMware Virtaul Center on a ESX server?

I want to use the Vmotion and DRS features but we don't have a extra server. i want use the present ESX server also as a Virtual center server.

Yes you can install VC in a VM and it is supported.

There's a whitepaper covering this (don't have the link at hand).

Yes. You can run Virtual Center within a VM on an existing ESX Server. There are pros and cons to doing it this way. Here is a link to a discussion about it:

From my experience with VC, I wouldn't do it. Not from a technical perspective, but from a functional perspective. You are going to impose some limits on yourself.

You don't need a great machine to run it. You could go to e-bay and buy an inexpensive Proliant DL 360 G3. It would be worth having it on a separate machine.

Out of curiosity what limits are we talking about? We run VC in our ESX environment, managing hosts around the world and haven't run into anything thus far.
