Vmware ESX4 Test lab

Guys,

Can anyone advise on a good mother board for running ESX4 on, I will be getting a Intel Q8400 chip as I need to run 64 BIt O/S 's in the lab, I have been looking at the hardware Compatability list and the Intel ICH7 chipset or ICH10 chipset look like they support the SATA onboard, I would prefer it I could find one with an intel network Network card as well that is supported and that will support 6 or 8 Gig or ram as well.

Any advise is welcome as to what anyone else has built. My budget for the PC is £300-£400, to include, CPU, Ram 6 or 8GB, Motherboard, and 2 or 3 Harddrives, one for the OS the other(s) for the VMs and images.

Many thanks - John

I have ESXi running on Intel 945 desktop motherboard (ICH7) with an Intel Pro 1000 GT network adapter and SATA drives without issues. Is really difficult to know exactly if the ESX will run on an unsupported environment, but you can try this one. The worst problem resides on the net adapter, followed by the disk adapter.
