Virtualization Forum 2008 - Orlando

Hey All, I attented the Orlando Version of this event and I was blown away by how much there was to this Free Forum. I have been to VMworld the last three years and this event was a smaller version of it's big brother, but in this case smaller doesn't mean without value. This event was free so I didn't expect much; boy was I surprised. There was free food and drinks for breakfast, they had snacks and other beverages throughout the day. I was impressed with the presentations, in fact the customer presentation was the best I have ever seen (yeah I am biast, but many others made a similar claim). I didn't speak to all the vendors like I usually do at VMworld, this time I listened to what my fellow peers were saying about the vendors and hit them up. I was most impressed with Left Hand Networks and Pillar, but I am not here to sing their phrases, just the forum in general.

Here is the way I am thinking of it. Not everyone has the ability to go to VMworld, if you can't, you really need to take advantage of this event even if yo u have to drive a couple hours to do so. I ran into and talked with many people, some who were as far away as Miami and as north as Jacksonville. I am sure others traveled further, but I couldn't possibly network with everyone.

Networking! I have made it a point to do my best (and I am bad with names and even a little introverted) and try to get to know as many people as possible at these events. I find that I learn so much by talking with other techs, talking with management people that I run into during lunch or breakfast, I even had a wonderful opportunity to talk with two or three "Big Whigs" that work for VMware!

One friend of mine that I have started to get to know took the day off from work to drive several hours to be able to attend this event.

I am very impressed with VMware, I believe they are doing a bang up job of building a community of people. Quite honestly I havn't seen this in other areas of IT and I really like what I see.

I have always believed that promotions occur when you demonstrate an ability to add benifit to an organization. With the wealth of knowledge that was at your fingertips at this event, anyone should be better prepared to pursue the promotion they want. You just have to show up as your first step!

Get out there, get involved, learn it, live it, love it - Kaizen!

Go Green,

Matthew

Thanks and I really enjoyed the presentation and was very humbled by the fact that some of the items I implemented were still around. Can't wait to get together again, I was telling Steve we need drinks and some VM Nerd talk!

I also need to spend more time in the forums and get my points up to a more appropriate level for my skills, maybe one day I could actually present at VMWorld!

Cheers,

Bradley Sessions

Awesome, "free" stuff is always better when it provides actual value. I agree about the VMware community, there is so much enthusiasm, its great to see.

I personally think we have a lot to learn from one another. Isn't it sad how certain cultures try to destroy that because of their inflexibility? I always enjoy meeting other great people! Throwing props out to you...
