VMware ESX 3.0.1

Hello,

I have 3 questions.

1. If I login to a host, called VMware2, using the VI Client. Can I migrate a Virtual Machine using VMotion?

2. If I have a SAN with only ATA Drives. Can I load my Virtual Machine disk files on to these LUNS? I know VM supports LUNS, but can it be SATA and ATA Drives that are apart of these LUNS.

3. Is it recommended that you just have one or two partitions called root and root and boot? You should still have /root, /boot, /var,/vmfs3, vmkcore and swap as partitions and not directories?

Thanks

For vmotion you'll need 2 ESX hosts and a server (physical or VM) running VirtualCenter (VC). It is the VC server that manages vmotion, and you won't be able to do it with the VI client directly connection to an individual ESX host. You'll also need to have the VM on shared storage. The below PDF has a list of those systems. If this is just for test / learning, you can possibly get away with an unsupported system for shared storage and there are free options for this.

What's important is that ESX support the SAN and not the disks that it uses as ESX won't have any visibility of the individual disks used.

If you expect to have a simple install - no hardware agents, few admins, etc, then the default partitioning will be fine. Otherwise you may want to make some changes - http://communities.vmware.com/message/708986#708986
