VMWARE Interview Questions

VM is not my forte other than the straight forward install from CD make some VM's on an ESX 3.02 server.

Can you folks in the communtity helpme put together an list of say 10-15 questions on VMware. (from simple to progressively harder) with a short answer after them?

I would appreciate very much, as I need to interview a few people tommorrow afternoon. Again any type of question that would help me spot out the obvious, and people jsut putting VM on thier resumes for the sake of it... Thx again !!!!

How these candidates "specialise" in virtualisation with out reading the forums is beyond me.., surely anyone specialising in the subject and completely interested in the technology would take the time to read the forums, even if they dont come accross issues, just out of interest to see what others are experiencing..

Not everyone spends a good deal of time trolling the boards. I can think of many people who work with VMware every day, know what they're doing and not reading the forums.

I agree, no one "trolling" the boards.., but a quick look now and then for sure. I think my forum status says it all, just one of those people who work with VMware but dont troll the boards as my profile is still well low in stats

anyway.., i think the forum postings are getting a bit off subject.., it was an observation people did'nt take lightly obviously..

This is all good stuff. Some other things I would ask are:

1. What is the difference between VMotion and Storage VMotion?

2. What are the steps to expand a C: or 😧 partition in a Windows VM?

3. How do you align a partition for a VM or VMFS?

4. Explain what an RDM is and when would you use it instead of a VMDK? What modes are there?

5. What is the difference between a clone and template and when would use one or the other?

6. What is the ks.cfg file used for? ( other than being a pain in the !@#S)

7. How would you install management agents such as the HP Management agents on an ESX host?

8. Can you name any differences between ESX and ESXi?

9. What is esxtop used for?

10. Have you shelled out lots of money for training materials

Almost past 6 months I work in performance team (using vCenter & esxtop)

Now I don't have much (fluent) idea about other parts of vsphere. So if you guys provide some more common interview questions with answers, it will be very useful.

What is features for creating Fault tolerance, in two scenario we cannot able to create FT Explain that issue.

1. How ESX manage memory like Balloning/sharing etc?

2. What is memctl is & when it is used?

3. What happen when VC fails & HA is already configured?

4. How many type are there to upgrade ESX host?

5. Difference between ESX 3i & VSphere4?
