Totall virtualization for a PC

Hi all,

I am just an ordinary PC user and I have found many benefits by using the VMware workstation. Nevertheless, I found it a little bit frustrating to virtualize an OS on top of another Os due to resource problems. So is there any product from VMware that virtualizes everything from boot up? I know that at enterprise level there are many products do the vertilization but how about the desktop users?

Welcome to the Forums - What you are referring to are the difference between hosted hypervisors like workstation and VMware Server and bare metal Hypervisors like ESX and ESXi - probably the closest thing to what you are looking for is the free ESXi product which will boot directory into the hypervisor - which is still an enterprise class virtualization platform

ESXi could be a solution but it require a supported hardware and could be not possible to install on some desktop/laptop.

If ESX is not installable consider also to use VMware Server on a minimal Linux distribution.

Andre, ESX is not a desktop solution at all, it can be solution for hosted desktop only, since you can't install ESX on you laptop and open console for a particular VM on the same laptop.

There is rumors about Citrix XenClient for desktops to be released later this year, and I'm 100% sure VMware is working hard in the sam way, to bring hypervisor solution to dektops. But unfortunately VMware don't let rumors slip and no info we'll see until product will be in late beta or RC stage. Or even until GA.

Right.

You need another client physical machine to access your VMs console.

But the original question was how to NOT "virtualize an OS on top of another Os due to resource problems."

At this time the only way (using VMware product) is ESX (I also write that could be not simple and could not work )
