Need help on setting up VDI

Hello All,

I am new to VDI and I have been assigned a project to virtualize 30 desktops using VDI. I went though few links on the net and found that VDI uses VDM and VDM inturn uses VC and is deployed on ESX host.

- Does VDI resides on ESX host (Server), where other virtual servers are running.

- How to virtualize desktop by taking snapshot (need more information)

- Internally how VDI works with VDM.

Can you please help me to understand how to virtualize desktop. Some step-by-step instructions or any links which has this information.

Looking forward for your help

Thanks

1) VDI aka View is a just a way to manage multiple VMs with client OS (XP, Vista). All VMs reside on ESXes, whether these ESXes are running another virtual machines or not.

2) Could you please be more specific - what do you mean?

3) VDM aka View Manager is a special service on Windows machine with it's own database. It automates VM provisioning and works as connection broker.

in order to implement VDI or VMware view, you have to have VMware infrasturcture 3.5 or vSphere 4 already implemented.

Managing VMware view (VDI) needs the knowledge of ESX plus VMware view. In my opinion you have to know all about ESX Servers before implementing VMware view. (or you have to have seperate admins for each)

For a small environment like 30 Desktops, I will assume that you will do both. do the math and see its worth it or you have to educate yourself for ESX Servers.

Actually no. You can buy View with VI Enterprise included to View license.

oh, I meant the infrastructure, not the licenses. As far as I know ESX Servers will host VMware view. That means you have to manage ESX Servers as well. (there should be a VMware Admin)
