I am part of a large development team working on a complex project that is built from many independent pieces. Too much time, IMO, is spent by developers tracking prerequisite subproject versions, downloading and finally configuring their own local environment for new development and test.
I am considering something like the following as an alternative:
An "image" is generated after every new build that includes a complete ready-to-run environment with required prerequisites. Developers are assigned on their own "instance" of the image for development and attach and test remotely.
Does this seem like a good fit for for VMWare? Which products should I investigate?
Thanks in advance.

You should take a look at VMware Lab Manager:

I think ESX and VMware LabManager would be a good start to read about !!!
