Exam Advice

Hi,

I am taking the VMWare Certified Professional (VCP101 I think) exam on Thursday (6^th December) and I would like any advice anyone would care to offer.

As I understand it I need to have done a course and I did a "VMWare Virtual Infrastructure 3 Install and Configure" course in April as part of my qualification. Outside of that I am revising using CBT's on VMWare Workstation & Server and one on VMWare ESX3. I'm not working at the moment and, whilst experienced, I lack paper qualifications (which is why I am so keen to get this one) so what I am looking for is some decent advice on what I need to be studying and any tips on resources.

Hi James,

Go here first:

Take the mock exam and then print out the Exam Blueprint:

The absolute best thing to do is get that blueprint and KNOW those objectives inside and out! Each objective tells you the specific piece of VMware documentation needed to master the objective. Definitely review your courseware again and again, and post any questions you have here at VMTN and they will surely get answered.

Read the following PDF's:

- Server Configuration Guide.

- Basic System Administration

- Resource Management Guide

- SAN Configuration Guide

- Virtual Machine Backup Guide

Also read and remember the maximum guide. Know and remember the interface in virtual center.

I am going to take one of the practice tests in a moment an, on the basis of that, decide whether I need to reschedul.I admit to being a bit worried ... as I understand it it's 80 questions in 80 minutes which sounds to me like a recipe for disaster (if only on the making-stupid-mistakes-under-pressure front)

If you fail a MS exam you get a free re-sit opportunity ... does anyone know if VMWare exams offer the same or similar (taking exams when you're unemployed and especially when they cost so much is a problem)?

EDIT: And following the mocks (which I failed though not by much) this is even more important .. is there a really good quick read guide to supplement my course and CBT's (bearing in mind I have less than 30 hours before my real exam)?

I was surprised on how many times the maximum guide saved my bacon during the exam. Re-reading the maximum guide was the very last thing I did before entering the Exam booth.

I for one did not know that MS offers a free re-sit opportunity. When did this start?

Thanks guys ... I have downloaded those PDF's. Realistically I don't have time to read them all so I chose to read the Quick Start, Introduction, Memory Config and the Configuration Maximums along with some information about important VMWare ESX files. I wasn't able to find a concise guide on VMWare server command line stuff (seemd to come up in the quizzes) but it's an imperfect world

OK ... the bad news? I failed!

The good news? Not bymuch (I got 66) so I'm diving straight back into it and booking the exam for the same day next week (I hope) and I figure I should have read/researched enough by then to pass.

p.s. I note I called it the VCP101 exam ... it's the VCP310 I'm doing.
