I think a lot of people are anxiously waiting for the release of VI4, but only VMware truly knows the exact date. Those under NDA have a good idea, but as always dates and times can be changed. ..... but it should be fun!
So will ESX come in a full ESX and an ESXi version?
-MattG
that's a question under NDA I believe, so If I answered I may break the NDA.
That's great news. Should I even bother patching my ESX 3.5 hosts to the latest March 30th released updates? Or can I just wait for the new 4.0?
Kevin,
It depends how many hosts in your clusters farm need to upgrade if its under 20 ESX hosts than I would do it but if its between 25-200+ hosts man I would wait and see what is actually ESX 4.0 has to offered in terms of migration path and how does it affect my storage and networking components and hardware compatability list as well. I wouldn't use it in production for first 3 months of released anyways due to major patches and bugs but wouldn't hurt to start planning for new ESX 4.0 development environment though. For some users, they wanted to be an early adopters and dying for the features mentioned during VMworld Europe.
Unfortunately, my environment regulations are very strict and I can't deploy anything that's not fully tested and proven. <MAKE SURE NO TIMEBOMB ON THE LICENSE PIECE" again this time VMware!

Hello,
Kevin, patch your systems as you would normally do. First you would not just push the next release into production without some testing time first. That could take you a while to perform as well.
It is best to be safe when doing major upgrades between version numbers. You may find you do not WANT the first release.

Yeah that's our strategic planning for version release rollout, it wouldn't surprise me if RParker is going to be the first guy to attempt his ESX 4.0 if he has the approval from his management and I would love to see his feedback. Hopefully he read this thread.
I just can't wait to play with new features so I think I'll upgrade 1 host that's not clustered.
So will ESX come in a full ESX and an ESXi version?
I thought someone at VMworld 2008 said that VMware would continue releasing both ESX and ESXi for the next several release, but, I don't recall who it was.

Based on the fact that the whole OS is being re-written in 64-bit you would think that 4.0 would be the perfect opportunity to switch over to installable only versions. 3rd party vendors would need to create new versions of their software for 4 anyway.

Rare for myself to at this point, confess to not having seen a single beta ... I was invited to be on the list, but was just too danged busy. But, as there's few suprises in life these days, I look forward to the time it goes GA ... then I'll go and get myself a tall coffee and enjoy the release notes.

Well, happy birthday to me!
I was just thinking about that on the way in this morning -- thought it's been awhile since a major release, seems like we're due...
Guess grabbing that extra blade will come in handy for testing 4.0.
Why is EMC touting a revolutionary announcement on 4/14?
-MattG
Yep, VMware finally announced its new version to be lunched 4/21.
You can check the first page of VMware. Also you can register to watch it online from 9 to 10:30 AM pacific time.
Have fun!
Yep, VMware finally announced its new version to be lunched 4/21.
According to VMware's website, "On April 21, 2009, we'll be unveiling how VMware is taking IT to new heights of efficiency". They haven't actually said anything about launching anything.

"Join Paul Maritz, President
and CEO of VMware, as he and other VMware leaders officially unveil _*the
next generation of virtualization technology*_ from VMware."
I assumed it will be VI4 or Vsphere or anything VMware wants to name it. No big deal. Maybe it is something else.
But I don't understand all these Secrecy and ...
Anyway, Have fun with what ever it is on 21st.
I hope it is not just announced but released on 4/21. We will see.
-MattG
Yeah...they said they are making an important announcement on the 21st. That means they will most likely announce WHEN they will TRY to release it...I don't expect it to actually be released on the 21st.
