ESX 3.0 recommended partition

I'm trying to install ESX3.0 on a new server and really want to increase the performance.

Are there any recommended rules in specifying partitions on ESX 3.0 or should I just follow all defaults.

There are a lot of variations on this, but I would recommend not just using the defaults.

Here is what I use:

/ 10GB

/boot 250MB

swap 2GB

/var 5GB

/tmp 5GB

VMFS for whats left

Search the forum for partition(ing), there are a few threads discussing this with a few opinions on what the best partitioning scheme is.

Read them and adopt one or create your own best practice out of it.

I've gotten to the point that, if using shared storage, I don't even use the "extra" local storage as VMFS. Too many times you have some admin who sees there's 50GB or so free and drops a VM on it --- when will VMware put ACLs onto VMFS volumes???
