It looks like Citrix is going to make a go at it.
The following article explains what they plan to do:
Citrix is now licensing per server, rather than per socket...
I know that XenServer isn't as good as ESX Server, but it looks like they may make an impact...

or to quote the old Chinese proverb, "may we live in interesting times"
Citrix were alway going to be aggressive in the market place. they have to get a foot hold before the Evil one's plague is unleashed on the unwashed masses

With this new XenServer licensing strategy, I can see small businesses will be looking at using XenServer and especially in Linux environments. VMware is pricey in this market but hopefully with this new announcement, VMware will reduce their license fee or something better. Even though, Fortune 500 wouldn't want to utilize XenServer at this point due to lack of robustness and maturity and can't compete with what VMware has in placed for HA, DRS, VMotion. That doesn't mean XenServer will not catch up in the future as the market growth and time allows. It will be a big competition with both Citrix/Microsoft standpoint. Can't wait to see what Oracle VM has to offered and how it works with enterprise world.
