Can a VMware Virtual Machine span multiple physical machines?

Hello,

Could anyone please tell me if a VMware Virtual Machine can be run on multiple physical machines?

Looking at scalability where initial startup costs are minimal (small server to start with) and then increase with demand, by adding more seperate machines like clustering on the fly. (Or is it a case, that if the hardware and operating system supports clustering / grid then WMware server can just sit on the top)

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

No.

A vm can only see max 4 vCPU and 64GB of RAM.... both resources cannot be aggregated from multiple physical hosts but rather they need to be provided by a single physical host at any single point in time.

no the concept you are refering too is Grid Computing, this is not VMware, VMware is a multiple guest single host.

BigIron did have a product which enabled the ability for a Guest to span multiple Hosts but it died a death when they jumped on the XEN bandwagan.
