Best Host OS?

I'm looking to build a platform to support 3 guest appliances.

  1. Windows Server 2003 Enterprise (SQL Server & AD Secondary)

  2. Astaro Security Gateway Server.

  3. Vista Ultimate

I am considering Solaris 10 or Ubuntu as my Host OS. any suggestions or comments?

Solaris 10 is NOT supported as a host OS with any of the VMware products.

What would you reccomend as the most robust, stable and lean platform for x86? I will be using VMWare Workstation 6.01.

There's no best host OS.

You should choose an OS you are familiar with.

When we talk about Windows hosts:

I prefer XP or Server 2003 instead of Vista

When we talk about Linux:

It doesn't matter to me as long as the host OS is officially supported.

I never used Ubuntu based systems but according to other users they work well.

For the linux operating systems I still have a preference for Red Hat Enterprise but Unbuntu is a good choice as well for running Workstation.
