when does vmware tools go "out of date"

when does vmware tools goes out of date? I updated a esx server from 123630 to 143128. Then moved a vm to the newly patched esx server but does not say out of date vmtools.

Then I manually updated the tools and the tools is now showing 143128.

Is it absolutely necessary to keep the tools version the same version as the esx server its sitting on?

It's not required, but it's always better to schedule vmware-tools update too, especially when "out of date" message appeared.

if you went from 3.0.x to 3.5 you would have seen an "out of date" tools. The build of your 3.5.x ESX host won't make you 3.5.x guests go out of date unless there is a specfic patch around the tools. I usually like to have my tools on the same build as my ESX hosts unless you have a mixture of 3.0.x Hosts and 3.5.x Hosts.

U4 will require a tools upgrade and you will see "out of date" tools and your non U4 guests

hope this helps.
