vmware tools for windows 2008 R2

hi,

when I install win2008 R2 in VM i see that my only option is to install the experimental tools for 2008 R2.

Since 2008 R2 is out now, how can I check or download the proper tools for it and not the experimental one I have.

the same goes for windows 7

Thanks

I have a question in relation to WIndows 2008 R2 as well. We are attempting to test Exchange 2010 and it has to be installed on Windows Server 2008. I was able to install Server 2008 but it freezes completely all of the time and I am unable to do anything except Power Off the VM and power it back on once it powers off.

We are running Vsphere 4 Enterprise edition on the Hosts that I am attempting these installs. I also had to use experimental tools for the VM Tools.

anyone else seeing this issue???

I have the same problem, windows 2008 R2 freez and I'm unable to do a thing but reset the VM.

I though it may have to do with the vnware tools (experimental).

thanks

Here, on Communities, people already reported about troubles with VMTools in WS2k8R2, so try to uninstall it.

Hello,

Moved to Virtual Machine and Guest OS forum.

VMware provides updates quarterly so one should be coming out, not sure if it will include 2008R2 yet or not.

Does anyone have any update on this? I'm also about to install Exchange 2010 on Windows 2008 R2 and I'm hestitant to move forward on this until the VMTools issue is resolved. While Win2k8 R2 wasn't released that long ago (October 22nd) a manufacturers release has been out for several months prior to this. Surely with Windows Server being the most popular O/S (sometimes I wonder why) and the advent of R2, VMWare should have had a stable VMTools updated and released soon after the official launch???

Any updates on this anyone?

Edit... ok, so it looks like its just the video driver thats not stable... http://communities.vmware.com/thread/233445

Yes, I've been VERY disappoined at the slow uptake in Windows OS support from VMware. And it's not just for VMware Tools. Heck, VMware doesn't even support all components on Server 2008 x64, let alone R2. As you've pointed out, MS has had RTM R2 products available to TechNet and partners since mid summer. Clearly they don't put a priority on testing and making sure all products run on the very latest operating systems. This causes big problems for customers that want to migrate to 2008 or R2, yet are held back by the lack of official support. This causes additional expense, time, and headache for customers.

Leave the SVGA drivers out when installing vmware tools.

Have the same issues with VMware 2.0.2, (tools 7.7.6. build 203138)

Can I update just the tools somehow, because there is no new VM Server version.

Same problem here on ESX Server 3.5.0, 110181 - error with SVGA driver. I also could not get the network interface working either - showed up with error in device manager. However, this was an install of a new Windows 2008 operating system on an existing VM that had Windows 2003 on there and when I edited the VM to remove and re-add the network adapter it started working.

Very glad it did as I'm in the middle of upgrading our main file server to Windows 2008 and the system is down for everyone. This has to be finished today!

So far, I've had the following unexpected issues:

  1. VT bit wasn't enabled in BIOS so Windows 2008 refused to install. Bemused how Windows 2003 x86 has been running on this host for three years without the VT flag enabled... that meant a visit to the office as it was one the things one cannot do remotely 🙂
  2. Windows 2008 blue screened on install start-up with stop error 0x0000005D. Found a similar post that said you had to change the operating system type in VM settings. Always wondered what that OS selector actually did... obviously, does some hardware level stuff so that Windows 2008 boots. Probably brings up the virtual CPU in 64 bit mode
  3. SVGA driver in VMware tools would not install - missed it out for now as this server will always been accessed via RDP anyway. Would like to fix though long term
  4. Network interface would not work until I removed and re-added the network adapater in VM settings

Ho hum...

Cheers, Rob.

Hi every one,

sorry to post again in another thread, but as i've seen your discussion :

please :smileycry:, where i can download a vmware tool installer wich support win server 2008 R2 ?  [ i just need all but video ] [i'm not used to put smileys, but it's reallt really my mood now ... ]

So : really really thanks for answering.

As i read from another person, i'm also disapointed a lot with vmware attitude.

I was a big supporter of vmware (as i'm making some advice to go/no go on certain technologies)

i'm afraid that vmware will lost some customer.

(note that free or not , it's not a problem)

just a vmware server2+ running on RHEL/centos linux (drop all host support) with vmware tools updated, and a vsphere management (drop web UI too)

i think that it could be an affordable roadmap

Best regards.

ludovic.

Note (if it can serve to somebody , i've fixed a lot of problems by moving frome hardware 7 to hardware 4 -workstation type 5.X with vmware converter)
