I am not sure - Was the VM powered on? If it was you would not be able to adjust memory - but you should be able to add a hard disk - so I am not sure - is there anything in the events log -

Is this happening with all the VMs?

well the machine was powered on and also powered off. Either way I was not able to adust the memory or add hard disk until I right click on the vm and upgraded the virtual machine hardware. What event logs should i check?

Are you able to power on those Vms? I mean were those VMs working fine?

Can you please attach the screenshot of hardware grayed out screen so that we can see what all hardware is already added to those VMs?

ok I see what the problem is. the Vm created was from a template created back in esx 2.5 so when deployed a vm from this template into the 3.5 cluster I had to upgrade the vm hardware. problem solved.

thanks
