need to move vm files to new storage on the same host

Hi,

on our pilot ESX server I have several machines in prod that are running on SATA SAN disks. Recently we added 3Tb of FC disks and I wanted to simply move those machines on this storage(that is of course attached to the same host). So in VC,I choose migrate and then I choose the same host. However I do not get option to choose datastore and therefore unable to move this VMs(10 of them). Do you know some other way? For some machine I can not have a downtime at the moment, but I need to finish this ASAP. Thanks.

I just shutdown all of my VMs during a planned maintenance window and moved all of them (40 or so) to new fat LUNs. Just pick a time to take it down if possible.

I believe if you schedule it as a Task, you get the option to move it to another datastore.

If you shutdown the VM (cold migrate) you will have a option to select a datastore, you cannot hot migrate a VM to another datastore. You can hot clone to different storage with Vmware Converter, also I have another method listed below.

No , it still doesn't asks for a destination datastore. I thought this would be a piece of cake !!!What a nightmare.

Can the Esx server see the datastore? assuming so:

Shut the guest down

Migrate to new host

select new host (or the same) next

select resource pool (if using) next

move virtual machine configuration files and virtual disks - radio button (this is the important one)

you can click advanced if you want different disks on different datastores

Then click finish

Yes, I know for cold move. I can not shutdown guest.

Hello,

If you can not shutdown the guest then it is not possible to move the VM to another datastore.

You could make a backup using vcbMounter from the SC while the VM is running and then restore it to a new location. Boot the new VM and shutdown the old VM, but somewhere in there you WILL have to shutdown the VM.

Best regards,

Edward
