guest tools version match

How critical is it to have the guest tools match the ESX release exactly? Is there a lowest common denominator that would work suitably well across U releases or even across products?

I should have constrained my question better. I only care about Ubuntu Linux server installations. So mouse and video drivers or any other UI related components are irrelevant.

Would the open-vm-tools alone be sufficient? If I relied on them solely, what would I be losing?
