emulated OpenGL in Solaris guests

Hi,

I'm new to vmware and searched the community forums for some hints re OpenGL in Unix guests. The last posts are pretty old already, just curious whether some news came up in the mean time.

My aim is to run an app under Solaris 10 (64bit), which requires OpenGL.

Has anyone experience or even success with using e.g. MESA as a way to emulate OpenGL functionality under Solaris?

Or is there a plan to provide OpenGL for unix guests as part of vmware?

Thank you!

Hm, interesting.

Has nobody else the need to run an OpenGL based application within a virtual machine?

Would appreciate to get any kind of feedback.

Hello,

Since there is no 3D support for VMs outside of some versions of workstation you are left with Mesa software emulation which means you are dependent on the speed of the vCPU. You may not get the performance you really desire with OpenGL within a VM. Also consider how this will be displayed, if its remote X then things will be even slower.

Hello Texiwill,

Thanks for your reply!

The perfomance of a software emulated OpenGL is probably not an issue, at least in respect to my app (and when using a real fast host system).

But another problem came up after checking the MESA site: MESA requires X-org version 1.5, but as far as I know Solaris 10 comes with version 1.3 only.

Do ypu know of any plans to provide OpenGL support within vmware?

Kind regards,

- Joerg.

That is new.. MESA has been around for quite a while. You should be able to find an older version.

Not something I know about unfortunately. There is some 3D support that was shown at VMworld last year, but it was not OpenGL.....
