Windows XP - Winlogon 100% CPU Usage

We have a scenario where our CTO reguarly uses a virtual image of our standard workstation build, this is running XP SP2 (soon to be SP3). He is connecting to this machine via RDP through VPN or when in the office from a standard FAT client. On occasions (increasing more often) when he is using the machine the CPU usage goes through the roof and memory starts to be consumed at an alarming rate. In our initial investigations we have discovered this is caused by the winlogon process. Eventually the machine runs out of memory and effectively freezes. To date we have not discovered what sub process of winlogon is actually causing this issue. Our ESX hosts have been recently upgraded to vSphere 4.0 however this issue was happening in ESX 3.5. Would be very interested to know if anyone else has encountered this issue and how they have got around this.

Many thanks

Graeme

Thanks we will investigate this issue. Is strange that this is only happening on a VM rather than physical machines. I presume SP3 will contain this fix

Me too. Have in mind that the VM is under a different hardware, with some very unusual drivers, what can make the OS behavior different under some circumstances.

Now applied SP3. Will need to monitor the situation to see if this returns. Thanks for all help so far
