Windows Virtual Memory

(esxi3.5)

If you give an xp virtual machine 512mb RAM with an unlimited resource from vcenter.

Then you give it virtual memory of 1.5gb in winodws.

does the virtual memory have any effect or is it a waste of time?

Hi,

Yes, you have to set the virtual memory as custom size or system managed size in windows for better perfomance .

It depends. Just giving a Windows machine a large pagefile is not a suitable substitute for real memory.

The best explanation I have seen for virtual memory sizing in Windows can be found here at Russinovich's blog.

Good Luck!

Set virtual memory just like on a physical box. If you have a 😧 drive move your page there and use 1.5 -2.0 x physical memory. The only difference is your 😧 is a VMDK instead of physical drive.
