Win 2003 Ent Terminal performance issues

Dell PE R900

4 Quad core 3.0Ghz

32GB memory

2 x Dell equal logic PS5000 with 12 disks each.

8 x gigabyte network cards. (3 x LAN, 3 x SAN LAN and 2 x Vmotion all on separate networks, plugged in on their own 1GB network switch)

Nic Teaming enabled on the 3 different vSwitches.

All vm Datastores running on Dell equalogic SAN.

vSphere 4 Standard build 208167 running on local disk.

4 x Win 2003 Ent 32bit Terminal servers running on PE R900.

Currently 4 VCPU's, 4GB memory. No com ports or Floppy drive. CDrom still there to do vmtools updates.

Tried allot of different configurations mentioned in google searches.

1. Giving Terminal servers 1 CPU.

2. Reinstalling Terminal servers and starting from scratch. (Win 2003 SP2, Office 2007 SP2 and IE 8).

3. Installing new VMxnet 3 network adapters on Win 2003 Ent TS.

4. Tried increasing the CPU resources allocation.

5. No HT and physical processor affinity set (1 processor 4 cores per TS.)

6. Not sure if I left anything out.

NLB setup in windows and vmware guide followed for setting it up.

Normally about 3 to 4 users logged on to 1 TS at a time.

IE, Office and winlogon mostly culparates.

Understand the winlogon to go high once a user logon.

But why will the Win 2003 Ent TS OS show CPU 100% when 3 of the users use IE showing about 25% usage of CPU.

Slowing down the whole server for all the users.

Did you install office 2007 sp1?

it signifigantly reduces cpu usage for outlook.

Are they running a java application from IE?

Hi

Office SP2 installed on all Terminal servers.

They probably do use java applications.

We susspect them of using Facebook.. but not entirely sure.

But we do know they use google mail in IE.

Hi,

I would suggest you to decrease the ammount of vcpu from 4 to 2vcpu.

I have 8 WTS all configured with 2vcpu an 4 GB RAM and everything is fine.

Here is also an article for citrix but it works also for MS.

http://vikashkumarroy.blogspot.com/2008/05/best-practices-for-deploying-citrix-on.html

I also have 2003 EE.

Hi

I didn try 1 CPU .. 2CPU's..

And the performance is still not that great.

Did you do any special settings on the Terminal servers?

No just a simple installation of Terminalservices with different software on it.

Is that 8 WTS running on 1 host?

What is your configuration? do you have a SAN?

How many users are connected to each WTS?

Hi,

8 WTS running on 4 ESX4 hosts.

Each WTS can handle 30 users, we use a software from 2X (www.2x.com Loadbalancer) to lodbalance the user sessions.

We use one ESX4 host with the newest build.

Upgraded hardware and running the vmnetx3 network card.

What hardware are for the ESX4 hosts?

We have 2 R900's.

But currently the 4 Terminal servers are running on just the one R900.

So I would put them into an ESX HA/DRS CLuster for Performance and HA reasons.

How many users are pointing on the WTS.

Have you set limit for CPU or Memory on the VM or on an Ressource Pool???
