Why does a partition show much more disk space used than the size of the files that are contained on the D partition running on a virtual machine

Greetings!!

I have a scenario that the data partition is showing much more disk space used than the size of the files that are contained on the data partion. And I could not find which program or anything is using this space. The problem is disk getting less and less.

The total space is 19.9GB. Used Space is 18.7, Free space is 1.35GB. The data itself is only 3GB.

Any help on this issue will highly be appreciated.

How do you get those data? Inside the guest OS?

Which guest OS are you using?

Are you sure that there aren't some hidden or system files that are wasting your space?

I have found the issue. The problem is System Volume Information folder is growing everyday and this is the place which holds up all the hidden space.

So the question is how to get rid of these files from Volume System Information folder.

Which OS do you have?

If is XP disable restore points, if is 2003/2008 check if you have enable Volumes Shadow Copy for Shared Folder.

It is windows Server 2003.

The problem is resolved. This was backup exec issue. System volume information folder for this drive was filling. I had to stop and restart the Shadow copy service. It brought back the lost space.

Thanks for your time today.
