Hello,

It is only for Workstation based guests. VMware Server does not have that support either at the moment.

When VMware Tools installs it adds a line to your /etc/fstab file. You can safely comment out that line. Unfortunately the configuration tool will add it every time it is run unless you specifically disable vmhgfs from being installed.

HGFS does filesystem sharing between guest and host OS.... You proberly dont need/ want this anyway...

When you install the VMware Tools leave out the Shared Folders component.

It is only useful for guests on Workstation or VMware server, not for ESX guests.

Hello,

You can try editing the /etc/vmware-tools/locations and search for all VMHGFS_* entries. Convert those to 'no' instead of 'yes' and just maybe vmhgfs will not change the fstab file. However, every time I try that a new install will override it, but an upgrade may not. I always reinstall as I am using the merged tools as I have 2.6.24 or greater tools.

Does the above post reflect the best way to permanently disable HGFS/Shared Folder support in Linux? This is with RHEL4/RHEL5 VMs in ESX 3.5.0 U2.
