VMware FileSystem Sync Driver (vmsync) and linux (ubuntu) guest

Hi,

When installing tools in linux client (ubuntu server) I get the following question :

[EXPERIMENTAL] The VMware FileSystem Sync Driver (vmsync) is a new feature that

creates backups of virtual machines. Please refer to the VMware Knowledge Base

for more details on this capability. Do you wish to enable this feature?

[no]

So as I think VSS is a windows feature, then linux may need this to do quisced snapshots ?

The VMWARE documentation says :

Creating quiesced snapshots using the SYNC driver requires waiting for I/O to

drain in the guest operating system. This might affect time‐sensitive applications,

such as DBHammer.

If you do not install the SYNC driver when installing VMware Tools, you can avoid

the delay caused by the I/O draining. However, it results in snapshots being only

crash‐consistent, unless you provide custom quiescing through pre‐backup and

post‐backup scripts in the guest.

So I don't get it, should I or Shouldn't I, compile the vmsync on linux guests?

Thanks

It is experimental, so I wouldn't quite recommend it as of yet, unless you are specifically testing that driver.

We have hundreds of Linux guests, and we never have a problem with crash-consistent snapshots. Modern journaled filesystems tend to deal with this very well. That's not to say you couldn't ever lose data, I have just never seen it happen in over 4 years.
