VMware Converter

Hi There,

First apologies if i'm posting this in the wrong place!

Here is my scenario...

We have a datacenter in the UK and we are trying to migrate all our systems in Europe to it. I was thinking i could use backupexec to backup all their physical systems to LTO2 tape. Then use VMware converter to import the system into our Virtual center.

However when using VMware converter i can't get it to see the LTO2 device to do the restore from.

Can anybody advise or suggest another method?

Thanks

Mr G

Have you considered eliminating BackupExec from the equation altogether and just using VMware Converter for the physical servers? After all that is what the tool was created for. Is the concern slow WAN links between data centers?

You could use Converter to export to an image file, and then use some other form of media (even a USB drive) to transport them to the other data center. Then use VMware Converter again to import them into your ESX hosts.

The slow WAN links is a major issue.

Your recommendation could work for a few systems but we also have some machines that are over 1TB.

AFAIK Veeam Backup and Restore supports tape devices.

Not what I would consider the best, or fastest, method.. but if you had the extra hardware at your new location you could use backupexec to restore the tape to a new physical server, then use the vCenter Converter at that point once you are on your LAN. Veeam would be a quicker, and less hassle, solution.
