Since installing ESX Server 3.0.2, I am no longer able to boot virtual machines from ISO images. As a result, deploying new VMs from scratch has become markedly more difficult. Has anyone else seen this problem?
As it turned out, this problem was related to an error in the VMFS volume. It was brown trousers time for a few minutes there, let me tell you. I had deleted a LUN that had been assigned as an extent out from under the volume. When I wrote data (the ISO images) to the volume, ESX Server apparently got confused and couldn't figure out where it had put the data. I rescanned the storage adapters on all my servers, and everything appears to be working fine.
