VMWare tools for 6.5 install

I have an ESXi host that won't install VMWare tools onto any of the VM's and comes up with an error message

•Unable to install VMware Tools. An error occurred while trying to access image file "/usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/windows.iso" needed to install VMware Tools: 5 (Input/output error). Please refer the product documentation or KB article 2129825 for details about how to get VMware Tools package for this guest operating system.

•vix error code = 21001

I've checked the KB and about to download the VMWare tools bundle for Windows and Linux, but not sure which one to download. The build of ESXi is 4564106 and after checking the one that was bundled with ESXi is 10.0.12. I've downloaded the bundle and seen that it is including Pre-Vista  and Pre-2k tools. Should I be using this one or are the tools backwards compatible with this version of ESXi?

Since the VM is looking for windows.iso, that means the guest OS is Vista/Windows 2008 or later. The latest version is 10.2.0.

The download links are available here.

Version 10.0.12 is the last version for legacy OS (pre-Vista). This is a blog post that explains this.
