VMWare causing Gbit port to change to 100mbit

The most bizarre thing has happened to my server and I hate to say it, but VMware appears to be the problem. The server has a onboard gbit NIC, which was always gbit until I installed VMware Workstation. Now it has changed to 100mbit. I have the latest driver on the NIC, and read the motherboard manual again to ensure it was truly gbit, and it is. I do not know if anyone has run across this before or not, but any help but be truly appreciated.

Motherboard: Gigabyte

Gbit Port: Broadcom 57xx

OS: Windows Server 2003 Standard (Running VMware workstation)

You can force it to Gigabit, but if autonegotiation sets it to 100 probably you have some problem (packet loss or some other error).

To change it click on HOST then go on Configuration tab and enter Networking category than click on the nic and click Properties.

Change from autonegotiation to desired speed (1000).

Let me know

Hi Cyberguy,

Be aware ... you are in a VMware forum and quoting that VMware doesn't work is not friendly.

It is better to request information and wait for the answers.

Your problem is not a VMware issue but a regular LAN issue.

The autonegotiation function does not work properly. If you are sure about your hardware specs you can set your switchport and the networkcard on the same LANspeed e.g. 1 Gbit and problem is solved.

Change from autonegotiation to desired LANspeed.

cheers,

Jan
